Science Communication Officer Participates in ASEAN Young Green Communicators Program in Jakarta

Written by Charles Joseph O. Nicolas, Science Communication Officer

Jakarta — Youth delegates and early-career professionals from across ASEAN gathered on May 7–8 for the ASEAN Young Green Communicators workshop, a program focused on science communication, plastic pollution, and sustainability. Among the participants was Charles Joseph O. Nicolas, a science communication officer.

The two-day workshop centered on strengthening science communication initiatives and promoting accessible scientific knowledge for communities in Southeast Asia. On the first day, participants explored the fundamentals of science communication and examined how scientific information can be transformed into more digestible formats, such as articles, storytelling pieces, and other content outputs, backed up with science-based evidence.

On the second day, participants applied these concepts through practical exercises. They worked with scientific data and developed article excerpts and communication materials as part of the workshop’s culminating activities, which also served as preparation for final outputs to be submitted in the following month. These collaborative tasks emphasize the value of critical thinking, clear storytelling, the responsible sharing of scientific information with broader audiences.

Beyond technical skills, the workshop underscored the growing role of youth and early-career professionals in advancing science communication across ASEAN. Strengthening their capacity to transform complex concepts into relatable narratives, initiatives like this help foster more informed and engaged communities, enabling decision-making that is guided by science-based evidence.

The program was made possible through organizers, namely the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, and The Conversation Indonesia.
