Meet the people behind MMPH

Matthew Vincent Tabilog

Founder & Adviser

Matthew Vincent Tabilog

With a strong passion on mangrove conservation, Matthew founded Mangrove Matters PH in 2020 during his time as a college student at Silliman University to mainstream mangrove awareness through science communication. He is currently the Chair of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnerships (EAAFP) Youth Task Force and the Knowledge and Capacity Building Lead of Youth Engaged in Wetlands (YEW). In April 2024, he was the Philippine youth delegate during the East Asian Seas Youth Forum organized by Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) and the Korea Ocean Science Museum in Uljin City, South Korea.

Matthew graduated with a B.S. in Marine Biology, magna cum laude, from Silliman University.

Niño Mark Bantiloc

Niño started his journey at Mangrove Matters PH out of an eagerness to expand his horizons. Back then, as an Environmental Science student in the mountainous region of the Cordilleras, his learning experiences mostly covered terrestrial ecosystems, with focus on forestlands. Now, after more than two years of stay in MMPH, he has finished his degree, specializing in Environment and Natural Resource Management, and is now working as an instructor at the Benguet State University. Niño firmly believes that linkages must be established across different communities and sectors as resolving environmental problems require participatory approaches.

Leo Anthony Castro

A passionate advocate for nature, Leo earned his B.S. in Marine Biology from Silliman University, with a thesis on ichthyoplankton and marine protected areas. In 2023, he was a delegate at the Local Conference of Youth PH, representing coastal communities. In 2024, he led a successful social media campaign that helped the passage of 11 new protected areas in the Philippine Senate. Leo also serves as Communications Lead of the Global Mangrove Alliance Philippines and leads the youth sector in advancing the National Coastal Greenbelt Bill. As Executive Director of Mangrove Matters PH, he applies his expertise in mangrove conservation through strategic leadership. He is also an advocate for animal welfare and sustainable living.

Parker Shane Manalaysay

Parker leads Mangrove Matters PH as Programs and Events Head, weaving his computer science background into marine conservation. A consistent leader with a knack for creative problem solving, he pushes boundaries by integrating technology with environmental protection. His passion isn't just about preserving ecosystems, it's about reimagining how digital innovation can transform our approach to marine conservation. Committed to community engagement, he collaborates with diverse groups to advance environmental causes. When not working, he explores the underwater world through freediving, captures moments via videography, and finds inspiration in music.

Myron Gavriel Baring

Myron Baring is an early-career ocean professional with an interest in mangrove ecosystems. He earned his degree in BS Marine Biology at Silliman University - Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences and has presented his research at national and international conferences. His work on mangroves has also been published in peer-reviewed journals. He collaborates with researchers and organizations to promote sustainable management and marine conservation. Myron is also a co-founder of Mangrove Matters PH.

Fhaizyl Desiree Duterte

Since she was young, Fhaizyl has always had a deep love for the ocean and its mysteries. As a marine biology student, she’s passionate about studying marine life and dedicated to protecting the environment. She spends her time not only learning but also contributing to ocean conservation efforts, whether it’s through volunteering at beach cleanups or advocating for marine protection. Fhaizyl's ongoing fascination with marine ecosystems drives her toward her goal of becoming a marine biologist and making a lasting, positive impact on the ocean she loves.

A microbiology student who have passion in marine environment and currently part of the MMPH Programs and Event Committee. Jy is a dedicated student leader with equipt skills and knowledge in secretarial works, financial reports, and event program preparations. Her commitment in serving her fellow students has fueled her passion to extend her leadership to the community. She believes in environmental conservation and protection, which is reflected in her membership in MMPH. She enjoys writing stories and songs, playing guitar, and planting in her small yard during her leisure time. Trees are like her calmness pills in this ever changing world, and so, she will continue to uphold the vision of MMPH.

Ella Mae Alleno

Ella is a dedicated and proactive undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries at the University of the Philippines Visayas, with a fervent commitment to advancing the fisheries sector and advocating for the welfare of coastal communities in the Philippines. Seeking opportunities to leverage academic knowledge, leadership skills, and passion for public service towards initiatives promoting climate justice, sustainable mangrove planting practices, and marine conservation efforts.

Hillary (Ely) Cruz is a 19-year-old climate advocate currently pursuing a BS in Chemistry major in Food Science at De La Salle University Manila. She has been advocating for climate action and justice for almost five years, but she began her on-ground journey in 2022 by joining Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines and Mangrove Matters PH. While balancing her organizational and academic responsibilities, Ely also founded SIBOL (Sustainable Initiatives for Biodiversity, Ocean, and Land), a newly established youth-led organization dedicated to promoting sustainable development and environmental conservation.

Mary Queen Agdalipe

A 24 year old artist, storyteller, and environmental activist from Iloilo, amongst her other hats. Her passion and motivation to serve the masses and Mother Nature has brought her to all the intricacies of the advocacy -- stemming from the desire to give back and uplift the unheard voices of marginalized communities, nature, and other species. Leveraging art and inclusive storytelling, she sheds light on social and environmental issues, turning whispers into movements and hoping to shift the narrative for the better -- navigating the complexities of activism with dedication and purpose. Currently, she serves as the Partnerships and Grants Officer of MMPH, working to forge collaborations that drive impactful change.

Mary Queen Agdalipe
Genesis L. Daquinan

Growing up near Iloilo River, Gen has seen how the restoration of mangrove forests revitalized his home city. After finishing a degree in fisheries, Gen is now pursuing a master in Spatial Sciences (Islands and Sustainability) at the University of Groningen where he had opportunities of doing work in insular and periphery regions in Europe like the Canary Islands, Lesvos, and the Danube Delta. His interests fall mainly on democratizing conservation practices as well as the scientific inquiry and knowledge production it entails.

Bernard John Prodenciado

Bernard earned a B.S. in Biology, major in Environmental Biology, from the University of Santo Tomas. With a deep interest in mangrove ecosystems, his thesis focused on mangrove diversity, for which his e-poster secured first place. As a member of the UST Mountaineering Club, he cultivated a strong appreciation for nature and the outdoors. His commitment to environmental advocacy extends to his role as an organizer for the 1NMYS. Bernard also co-authored a critical essay discussing the ecological and socio-economic importance of a Ramsar Site and examining mangrove earthballing and relocation approaches. He is particularly keen on engaging in science discussions, particularly in marine environments and conservation biology.

Venice Alyson Unabia

Venice Alyson Unabia graduated from Cebu Normal University - Main Campus in 2024 with a degree in Biology, specializing in Environmental Biology. She was a DENR-Argao intern, participating in mangrove and seagrass assessments, and conducted an undergraduate thesis on blue carbon, funded by MMPH. She has been part of Mangrove Matters PH since 2022 and currently leads the Creatives and Social Media Committee. Her passion for art and editing fuels her work in creating artistic content that raises awareness about mangroves and coastal ecosystems, making conservation relatable and accessible, especially to the youth. Through creative social media posts, she hopes to inspire others to protect these vital ecosystems.

Althea Monleon

Althea Monleon is 22 years old. She recently finished her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at Marinduque State University. Her research interests include species diversity and carbon stock assessment in forests, particularly mangrove ecosystems. Her undergrad thesis was selected and had the opportunity to be presented orally at the 10th Asian Wetland Conference last November 2024. Aside from her passion for environmental conservation, an interesting fact about her is she was a G17 Ambassador for SDG 9 in her junior year in college. Currently, Althea is working in a mapping and environmental consultancy firm in Los Baños, Laguna.

Goldy Jane Alcontin

She is an environmental advocate championing ecosystem conservation and stewardship. A Magna Cum Laude graduate in Biology with a specialization in Environmental Biology from Cebu Normal University, she brings her expertise to Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu as a research teacher, where she cultivates environmental awareness among young minds. As a member of Mangrove Matters PH since 2022, she has contributed to marine ecosystem conservation through social media management and educational content creation focused on mangrove protection. Through her teaching and environmental advocacy work, she hopes to inspire students to actively participate in building a more sustainable future. Goldy is a former vice head of the team.

Nathalie Kyrah Mostiero

A Palaweña environmental and wildlife scientist, Nathalie Kyrah holds a BS in Environmental Science from Palawan State University and is pursuing a Wildlife Studies Master's at UP Los Baños. As a government researcher, she studies local fauna and promotes conservation through community outreach. She combines her professional dedication with personal interests in adventure, photography, and videography. Through educational initiatives and behavior change programs, she works to raise awareness about Palawan's wildlife, believing that local species conservation is key to protecting the region's broader biodiversity. Her approach starts in her community and aims to inspire wider participation in conservation efforts.

He is Eugie V. Cinco, a 26-year old environmental scientist in the making and an environmental conservation advocate. He is a researcher from the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines specializing on mangrove ecosystems and other aquatic ecosystems research. He is a graduate of BS Biology and Masters of Sciences in Environmental Science from UP Tacloban.

Genea Nichole Cortez

Genea Nichole Cortez, fondly known as 'Ney,' is an early career mangrove botanist-teacher turned artist. She obtained her undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Secondary Education, with a major in Biological Science at the University of Santo Tomas in 2018. At the same university, she completed her Master of Science major in Biology in 2020. Her master's thesis is focused on the Del Carmen Mangrove Reserve in Siargao Island. She is teaching at the University of Santo Tomas College of Science. Her artworks feature the Philippine mangroves. You can connect with her through her art passion project, Neymatophores.

Princess Lachica is a graduate of BS Biology at Angeles University Foundation and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Marine Science degree at the University of the Philippines Diliman. In this fast-paced and continuously moving world where everyone can be connected, she wants to extend her hands to bridge the gap in knowledge and opportunities for a more inclusive and sustainable environment. She aims to create ripples of hope for systemic change by raising awareness, facing problems head-on, and being part of the solution.

Adrian Josh Lepiten

Adrian Josh ‘Jace’ C. Lepiten is a dedicated Bachelor of Science in Biology graduate from Cebu Normal University, specializing in Environmental Biology. He is currently employed as a Seaweed Extension Officer at Coast 4C, an Earthshot Prize finalist, where he focuses on promoting sustainable seaweed farming practices and collaborates closely with local farmers. Jace is a former head of the team.

Jeanne Rian Dialimas

Jeanne is a biology teacher and a science communicator from Cebu, Philippines focusing on environmental science and conservation. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from Cebu Normal University where she graduated with Latin Honors – Magna Cum Laude. She became a member of Mangrove Matters PH in 2022 and subsequently assumed the role of Science Communication Vice Head in 2023. She served as an intern at the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Argao, where she acquired practical experience in biodiversity assessments and conservation initiatives. Jeanne loves traveling, hiking, and photography. Jeanne is a former vice head of the team.

Kian S. Nuñez is a dedicated environmentalist with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology degree from Cebu Normal University. Inspired by Sir David Attenborough, he aspires to contribute to environmental knowledge and conservation. As an elected SK Councilor for Barangay Cogon, Cordova, Cebu (2023-2027), he chairs the Environment and Agriculture committee. His commitment is further evident in his membership with Mangrove Matters PH (MMPH), recognized by the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP), He is also a member of the Youth Advocates for Climate Action (YACAP) and Youth for Blue Carbon by OCEANA.

Cyril Mae A. Embalsado graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Biology from Cebu Normal University. She earned certificates of completion in Agro-Entrepreneurship (NCII) and Aquaponic Food Production from TESDA. In 2024, she was one of the poster presenters at the 33rd Annual Fr. Heinrich Schöenig Biology Symposium. In 2023, she worked with BFAR - 7 at the Central Bangus Hatchery and Clarin Freshwater Fish Farm. Since 2022, she has been actively involved with Mangrove Matters PH as a researcher, content writer, and member of the science communications committee. Her interests include environmental research, sustainable agriculture, and biodiversity conservation.

He is a Licensed Professional Teacher teaching High School Biology and Chemistry at Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu. He is also pursuing a Master’s in Environmental Biology at Cebu Normal University. Passionate about research and science communication, he has presented at various international, national, and local conferences on biology and environmental science. He is part of a think tank assessing reclamation’s impact on biodiversity and the Science Communication Team of Mangrove Matters PH, where he has conducted mangrove talks and field walks among youth to raise awareness and promote conservation. His work focuses on education, research, and environmental advocacy.

Nemore M. Lahoy

Nemore Lahoy is a constant learner and project support staff from Davao Oriental State University. He initially focused on solid waste management, specifically studying the pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) program through surveys and interviews. Currently, his research expands to macro-, meso-, and micro-plastic pollution, assessing characteristics like weight, shape, and color, and analyzing polymers using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. He is also investigating microplastic ingestion in marine organisms such as fish, seashells, and bivalves, as well as in sediment environments like coral, seagrass, and mangroves.

Charles 'Chad' Joseph Nicolas

Charles Joseph O. Nicolas, also known as Chad, is a recent graduate of Environmental Biology from the University of Santo Tomas. His passion for wetland conservation, particularly mangrove forest restoration, has shaped his advocacy journey. Guided by mentors who supported his growth as an aspiring youth advocate, Chad is now deeply committed to promoting and defending environmental and human rights. Outside the world of wetlands, you’ll often find Chad running along city streets, conquering mountains, or creating art through coffee painting.
