Alvin Baloloy is a GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist with expertise in environmental assessment, coastal resource mapping, land cover monitoring, marine spatial planning, and satellite-based mangrove mapping. He holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Ateneo de Manila University. He has served as a consultant for the University of the Philippines, JICA, Tokyo Institute of Technology, FAO, and Oceana. Alvin has played a key role in Blue Carbon projects in the Philippines, developing remote sensing methodologies for mangrove extent and zonation mapping, and aboveground biomass estimation. He is the author and developer of the globally adopted Mangrove Vegetation Index, used by FAO in its latest global mangrove estimates. As the lead consultant for Oceana’s MangroveLEAF, he integrates satellite technology with modeling techniques to predict mangrove loss and support restoration efforts.
