The First National Mangrove Youth Summit: A Transformative Experience
The First National Mangrove Youth Summit (1NMYS) changed me in ways I never imagined! Before stepping into this journey, I was a newbie environmental advocate, boxed in by limitations, fear, and doubt. I wanted to take action, but hesitation held me back. Deep inside, however, I felt a growing burden to speak up and make a move—because I knew that when young people step out of their comfort zones, real change happens. And now, that long-dormant drive within me is fully awake again!
Before meeting the delegates and organizers onsite, I told myself I’d just be a quiet, low-key guy from Davao—partly because I wasn’t that fluent in Filipino (Bisaya represent!). But, surprise! I was wrong. I found myself surrounded by fellow young advocates from Mindanao who shared my passion and struggles. Special shoutout to Eden from GenSan, the first person to match my humor and break the ice. That moment of connection lifted a weight off my shoulders and made everything easier.
The sessions ignited my excitement for possibilities I had never considered—especially Dr. Primavera’s inspiring real-life work with mangroves. As someone from a coastal community in Davao del Sur, her insights struck a deep chord. I realized: I have work to do.
The panel discussions with esteemed speakers further fueled my curiosity. Their responses were experiential, relatable, and incredibly insightful. Every word reminded me how much more I have to learn.
But what truly stood out was the passion and dedication of the young organizers. They showed me that collaboration can turn vision into reality. Their efforts left a lasting mark on me—I realized I need to be part of a strong network, a community that will fuel my fire when it starts to fade.
One of the most memorable moments? The role-play exercise, where I had to relive a tough encounter with a challenging local leader. That experience not only pushed me out of my comfort zone but also helped me become one of the best performers during the town hall activity. Kudos to that!
The venue itself was the perfect setting for this transformative experience. Surrounded by nature, we had the chance to truly immerse ourselves in its beauty—and in the harsh realities that threaten it. The birdwatching sessions, museum visit, and educational nature walk all reinforced one crucial truth: the environmental movement is urgent, and we need to take it seriously.
One for the Books
My 1NMYS experience is something I will carry with me forever. It rekindled my passion, expanded my perspectives, and connected me with like-minded advocates who share the same vision for a better future.
I look forward to the day when young environmental advocates like us are heard and are making a real difference—one community at a time.
